U.S. Coast Guard Random Maritime Drug Testing - What you need to know

Each year, the U.S. Coast Guard publishes a notice reporting on the results of random drug testing for the previous calendar year's MIS data and the minimum annual percentage rate for random drug testing for the next calendar year. The Coast Guard explains that the purpose of setting a minimum random drug testing rate is to assist it in analyzing its current approach for deterring and detecting illegal drug abuse in the maritime industry. For each calendar year, the Coast Guard announces what the minimum random drug testing rate will be for that year. For instance, for the calendar year 2017, the minimum rate is 25 percent. We understand that this maritime drug testing rate may be increased by the Coast Guard. Interestingly, for the 2016 year, the Coast Guard reports that the MIS data indicates the positive drug test rate is less than one percent.
